Overcoming Anger with Emotional Regulation

Anger! that flash of that grips the chest and gut!  It focuses our attention to the source of our indignation and calls for immediate action in

our defense, correcting someone else’s behavior.

It can be overwhelming and what seems reasonable and honest to us, inside our brain, can be an exaggerated tirade by an observer, even if the rant is not directed towards them?

Why do we react in such a big way? Why do we react at all, especially when our personal safety and well-being is not at risk,… especially when it’s directed toward someone we love and care deeply for?

Past emotions that are unresolved still exist in our bodies.  For some reason, the natural process of regulating the emotion when it first happened was interrupted and it didn’t dissipate. In the future, when a situation triggers that emotion, not only do we react to the circumstances of the current situation, but the stored emotion is added to the mix. The mind then faces a heightened narrative to which it feels compelled to respond.

We want to be in the present moment.  Life would be so much simpler if we only had to deal with what is happening now.

How do we get rid of those stored emotions?

It turns out that by paying attention, in a very precise way, to the physical sensations that represent an emotion, it will dissipate and be removed permanently.

Emotional Resolution, EmRes, protocols have amazing effects.  In a short 30 minute or less session, a single emotion can be addressed and resolved.  It doesn’t matter what the emotion is.  The origin and story about how the emotion got locked in the body is not important to this process. We only deal with a current-ish situation that has triggered the emotion.

It sounds too simple to be true, but I have many clients who can attest to the remarkable results they have experienced.

What is your Emotional Temperature?

How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?

By noon what is your mood?

When your work day is done, what emotions are swirling?

Do you drop off to sleep gently? Is your sleep restful?

A large part of having good emotional intelligence is the capability to recognize our own emotions, identify the different feelings and use this information to guide thinking and behavior, to manage our reactions and adapt to the situations we find ourselves in.

But, most of wander around in a blur of feelings that we don’t know how to control or where they came from apart from the immediate event. And often, our most distressing times are over-the-top responses, soaring much larger than the current reason calls for. And these events repeat with a disheartening frequency, even if the exact cause is “different”.

It can be overwhelming and frustrating.  How do we get past it? When is our breakthrough?


EmRes – Emotional Resolution is a natural process that we are born with.  Sometimes the resolution process gets interrupted and the emotions that are active or in-flight do not get metabolized.  When the same emotion is triggered at a later time, even years later, the original unresolved emotions will activate and flood the current situation, prompting reactions and drama that are in excess.

Good new! We don’t have to know anything about the event or trauma that caused the original block.

In an EmRes session, a current troublesome situation is relived by describing the current situation and briefly telling the story enough to get the event firmly in mind.  Then the lymbic system in the brain is activated to completely digest the emotion(s) that were flaring.  Once emotion’s physical sensation blueprint is gone, the emotional block is expired as well.

Once complete, future emotional situations of a similar nature will not cause the “resolved” emotion to swirl into another emotional storm. In fact, each individual emotional resolution will quell most or all situations that have a similar emotional root.  In other words, an EmRes session for anxiety using one situation can resolve the unnatural anxiety felt in many, if not all, of your situations.

Clearing Emotions to Heal the Body

I had a client in for an Emorional Resolution or EmRes session followed by a bodywork session. She had been in previously for just bodywork (Bowen) and was intrigued by my description of EmRes.
So we did the EmRes session and afterwards she said, ” Most of my physical sensation were in places were I have ongoing pain or other issues.”
Her sensations didn’t “start out” on her physical issues but at the end, they were the “last ones” to appear and resolve.

Then I had another client that had a similar experience… Previous session was Energywork (Reiki, etc) and this session was EmRes + Bowen for body pain we had discussed before.
As the EmRes session wound down, his physical sensations were in the areas of his physical dysfunction.

These sessions confirm, again,  the link between the emotional/mental and physical layers of our being.  I believe the EmRes session is taking off the Emotional/Mental congestion off the body, so that the physical issues can be addressed and released.

Pains in the body–what do they mean?

trappedEmotionsWhy do we have pain and weakness in one part of the body and not another?  When you fall or trip, is it always on that one side? do you always seem to land on that one knee? tweak that same ankle?  OR when working with your hands and arms, does that one elbow see to take the brunt of the work? is it the wrist that seems to complain first? OR does your lower back seem to give out before anything else?

This is your body trying to send you a message about the underlying emotional – mental issues that are unresolved.

When we have any kind of unresolved trauma or drama in our lives, the memory and energy of that fight-or-flight-or-freeze stress remains, stuck in our tissue.  If we don’t do any physical or personal emotional work to release that stress, it will slowly grow with time by accumulating additional instances.  At some point the “pool of stress” will effect the surrounding tissues with enough impact that pain, dis-function and maybe dis-ease will result.  Unresolved it will get louder and louder and until it gets your notice–enough for you to pay attention to it.

Here is the pattern of any chronic issues: it started with a small annoyance, was ignored, it got more frequent, was ignored, it got larger (louder), was maybe superficially treated–but really just ignored, etc…until finally it seems all of a sudden, there is this big issue. and we wonder where it came from.  hmmm….?

So here it is. It hurts. What to do?

There are lots a charts and graphics around (like the link below) that can point you in the general direction.

  • Shoulders = carrying a burden that is too heavy, given to you by your family, the world (right side) or your self(left side).  what and why are you carrying it? what happens if you put part if it down or ask for help? remember that it takes a village?
  • Hips = support in your life, financial(right side) or emotional(left side). what kind of support do you need? must it come from others? or can you support and love yourself? who is not capable of supporting you?
  • Heart = love and connection. where are you disconnected from yourself, your family (given or chosen), community, your maker?  how are you experiencing shame, loss, lack, anger?  who can make you feel loved? how do you connect with yourself and others? what blocks are in the way?
  • the list goes on….

The trick is to do this emotional work ALONG WITH the physical together.  Doing this work from two arenas, emotional and physical, you will create a spreading spiritual effect.  The results are greater; swifter strides towards releasing the agony.

In my clinic, we do this with work with good results.   Reiki, Quantum Touch or general Energy work for the physical side and talking though bubbled up sub-conscious images that the theta state brings for the emotional side.

This is exactly the kind of work that represents the first energy work session I ever had and kept me coming back for more.  It eventually lead to me learning and taking it on as a profession.

Reiki for your journey thru cancer

I read this great article about Reiki and Cancer treatment and I have to agree…It’s remarkable.ReikiandCancer

I work with clients in all stages of their cancer journey. Some have worked thru it to be “survivors”  in remission and a couple have given up the fight and passed on, returning Home.  It was and is my honor and privilege to work with them all.

I truly feel that in all cases, Reiki is a great asset in their treatment plan. If you have cancer, Reiki sessions will help

  1. Relax the mind and body as you maneuver through test results and decisions about treatment,
  2. Instill calmness. When out of fight-or-flight, the parasympathetic rest-and-digest systems turn on, facilitating healing and repair.
  3. Treatments and medications are more effective when you are calm and relaxed. This is especially true of pain meds, so fewer and lower doses may be necessary.  It will also reduce side-effects of chemo and radiation.
  4. Connect you spiritually to choices that deeply resonate with you, helping sift through options and make decisions that are yours to make.

Reiki is portable, it can be done anywhere. I have worked with clients in my office, in hospitals, in recovery facilities and in their homes.

Calming Restless Legs

You’re laying in bed, just about to drop into sleep, and there’s the itch or twitch that startles you back from slumber.  or the knee jerks that make you RestlessLegSyndromefeel like a puppet with someone else pulling the strings. Some legs get wild enough to force sleeping in a bed separate from their years-long partner.  Whether on the sofa or in bed there seems to be no escaping the legs that want to move.

I’ve helped clients with Restless Leg Syndrome.  I’ve done it using Energy and Bowen, individually and both in separate sessions.

Bowen helps neurological issues by loosening fascia which restores tissue hydration and unrestricted communication with the limbic system. Moist tissue can respond to our activity demands, recover from those exertions and rest when “in waiting”.

Fascia also holds our body memory or muscle memory- the patterns or reactions that we carry out without conscious thought.  It also hold the somatic memory of injuries and trauma that we have incurred.  Balanced fascia is more fully in communication with our limbic system which houses the emotional-mental portions of the injuries and traumas.  The feedback between the fascial and limbic systems integrate the physical and emotional-mental responses to new and chronic injuries. This will make healing responses more appropriate, releasing cascading inflammation, edema and chronic muscle spasms.

Energy sessions help rest the spirit and can reveal the spiritual reason for the physical manifestation.  Our work on this plane is activated by our family and friends when we are young, usually by age 7 through misunderstanding and trauma. If we don’t respond by facing and resolving the issue, it will be presented to us time and again, louder and more painful each time, until it gets our full and complete attention. 🙂 Each of us have a unique and varied life course. Energy work can help “lift the lid” on those unresolved reactions that we buried in our bodies and memories.  As adults we have more control over ourselves and our environments and have better tools to help remove these bundles of pain and sorrow.  Our itches and twitches are our sub-conscious trying to tell us something.

Fascia, Fascia, Fascia

It seems that I can’t see it or hear it often enough: Fascia is amazing.  It holds us together.  It is our body’s silent communication system, more rapid FasciaImbalancesthan nerves. It transports fluid between muscle, organ and circulatory tissues, keeping them supple.  It collects fluid around damaged tissue like a bandage.  Think of healthy fascia as a series of fine net stockings or cobwebs that surrounds every fiber, bundle of fibers, groups of bundled fibers, tissue groups, organs, separating body compartments in large sheets or diaphragms, supporting and holding everything in it’s place. It’s everywhere.  It’s pervasive.

Fascia can be physically damaged by injury or as a byproduct of some medical procedures, just like any other tissue. Fascia also reacts to our emotions by contracting over the trauma that is energetically held in the body like a bandage.

“Damaged” fascia is not the fluid flexible net of fibers that functions fully.  Injured fascia is tense, jumbled and convoluted, like a fisherman’s net that has gotten balled up and tangled.  Over time these areas, will become tightened, knotted and kinked, stiffening into armor like hardness.

In this compromised condition, fascia can not transport fluid nor relay messages as is normally found.  The tissue is it supports become dry and brittle and incommunicado from the rest of the body.

Injured fascia can cause severe, disabling, chronic muscle pain.  It affect not only the tissue that is armored, but all muscles and tissues that have to work differently because of this restriction.

When there is a restriction in one area of the body, there will be compensation on the other side of the body in a diagonal direction. That “overworked” area will cause another area, diagonally across the body to compensate.

Pretty soon there is a zigzag of stressed body areas. So often what hurts is not the originating point of the problem.  Neck injuries can become hip and leg issues and vice versa.  Ankle issues can show up in the shoulders. So what needs help the most? Where it hurts now or the original injury?

Bowen to the rescue!

Bowen works with fascia as it’s target.  When skin, muscles and tendons are moved, the fascia they are connected to moves.  If gently and methodically done, the fascia will again separate into it’s beautiful web-like structures. The armor will soften, the tissues are hydrated and the information highway is connected again.

On the other hand, tissue and it’s associate fascia is moved  quickly, hard and fast–it resists and stays in it’s armored state.  Remember the corn-starch and water experiment?  If you handle it with too much force, it resembles a solid brick.  But if you handle it slowly, it feels more like sand or liquid.  The same is true of fascia–the slower and gentler the better.

In my opinion, almost all all chronic pain announces an underlying fascia issue.  The longer the pain has been in place, the more compensating patterns have been erected. And the more hardened armor, locking it into place will be present.

A series of Bowen session will unwind these patterns. By gently manipulating fasical sheets through their connections to other tissues, the elasticity is returned.  Relaxed fascia loosens it’s grip on muscles, organs and other tissue allowing the communication and fluids to flow at more appropriate levels.   Oh, what a relief!

What is Reiki doing?

At this point most people have heard about Reiki, even if they don’t have a clue what it is, what it does or how it feels.  Most of the stuff you find “outReikiHands-smilingWoman there” is anecdotal and elusively described.  I ran across this description which is pretty concise, if a little understated–meaning the depth of each paragraph can be explored in volumes–but that would defeat the concise part 🙂

How Reiki Works

This is a great description of how we are made and clue to how healing can be conducted.

I work with all my client’s energy systems in every session.  Bowen sessions focus on the physical-myofascial interface to the fluid and piso-electric systems of the body.  Intuitive and dowsing sessions focus on the subtle energy of sub-conscious and super-conscious bodies.  Reiki and Energy work sessions focus on the bio-energy of the auric bodies and their chakras. From the “focus level”, the results will ripple though the rest of the body levels-physical, emotional, mental, spiritual.

It’s all parts of the same metaphysical/physical system that makes up our body and experience here.  Each method is a just different way to get in touch with the physical pain, spiritual cramp, emotional cramp or life-path derailment.  When you affect one level, all levels are affected as well–presenting opportunities to grow and expand our experience by releasing the old patterns and obstacles.

The work continues to happen over the course of the next five days.  Typically the second and third day are the biggest “adjustment” days, then it settles down.

It’s a wonderfully natural and holistic way to heal what is causing your dis-ease.
