Bring your headache here!

By Sue Siebens

HeadAchesandBowen

Headaches.  There are so many “kinds”.  WebMD says there are 150 diagnostic headache categories. The cause of headache can range from a “bump on the head”, to emotional, illness, hormone imbalances, inflammation, medication, chemical, stress, fluid levels, activity levels, allergies, and the list goes on and on. When you have a headache, it’s sometimes hard to ignore. It’s difficult to think or concentrate, even soft noises seem too loud, and slight irritations become a huge pain in the what-i-sit-on.

If the cause of the headache is known, then it’s much easier to address.  This is usually the case with acute pain–the source and result are closely linked by time and the detective work to a solution is clear.

But what about when pain is chronic and/or unresolved?

Bowen Therapy can address headache and migraine intensity, duration and frequency.

Bowen Therapy, also know as Bowenwork in the US, uses a series of gentle moves on structural tissue (muscles, tendons and ligaments) to affect the fascia and nerves. Treatment at pivotal locations in the body, neck and head relax the internal mechanisms that propogate headache and migraine, reducing and shutting down the stress and myalgia.

The first Bowen session is generally about assessment and bringing the body to a sort-of “ground-state” of balance on which to build further work, including treatment of the loudest issue that is presenting at session time.  It is important to commit to at least three Bowen therapy sessions, a week apart, to give the body and brain time to work any adjustments and corrections in the body structure and function.  Each additional session further informs the body’s intelligence to identify any imbalance or misalignment that is locked in as chronic pattern(s).   This work will process through the body over the course of 5 days, correcting and adjusting itself back to it’s “healthy” state, or as close as possible.  After three sessions is a good point to review the overall progress.  The total amount of time for treatment and recovery depends on personal history and healing tempo.

What is Reiki doing?

By Sue Siebens

ReikiHands-smilingWoman

At this point most people have heard about Reiki, even if they don’t have a clue what it is, what it does or how it feels.  Most of the stuff you find “out there” is anecdotal and elusively described.  I ran across this description which is pretty concise, if a little understated–meaning the depth of each paragraph can be explored in volumes–but that would defeat the concise part ūüôā

Anyway, take a read to get the 50,000 view of whats going on when a Reiki Practitioner puts there hands on you.

How Reiki Works

This is a great description of how we are made and clue to how healing can be conducted.

I work with all my client’s energy systems in every session.  Bowen sessions focus on the physical-myofascial interface to the fluid and piso-electric systems of the body.  Intuitive and dowsing sessions focus on the subtle energy of sub-conscious and super-conscious bodies.  Reiki and Energy work sessions focus on the bio-energy of the auric bodies and their chakras. From the “focus level”, the results will ripple though the rest of the body levels-physical, emotional, mental, spiritual.

It’s all parts of the same metaphysical/physical system that makes up our body and experience here.  Each method is a just different way to get in touch with the physical pain, spiritual cramp, emotional cramp or life-path derailment.  When you affect one level, all levels are affected as well–presenting opportunities to grow and expand our experience by releasing the old patterns and obstacles.

The work continues to happen over the course of the next five days.  Typically the second and third day are the biggest “adjustment” days, then it settles down.

It’s a wonderfully natural and holistic way to heal what is causing your dis-ease.

Pains from the Rear

By Sue Siebens

Even if you don’t have sciatic pain yourself, chances are you know someone that does.  Sciatica can manifest as mild to severe pain, burning, tingling etc from the hip down through the foot.  It develops when a nerve or nerves traveling from the lower lumbar and sacral spine get pinched, rubbed or otherwise compromised on its way to the tissue it’s servicing.  On the journey, it must weave a path through and around bones and muscles.  If the path gets too small whether from the variation in human structure, injury or pregnancy, these nerves have to problem telling us they are in trouble.

SciaticaNervePain

Sciatica Causes

The good news is that many of these issues can be addressed with Bowen Technique.  Most Sciatic pain originates in the hip area. The hips have lots of big strong muscles trying to keep us upright and balanced, whether we are sitting, standing or bending over. Any stress to one side of the lower body can setup a pattern of imbalance in the work load, in order to maintain our “upright posture”. Over-worked muscles on one side, can lead to continuously tight muscle on that side.  The other side then has over-stretched (too loose) muscle on the other side.  This then ends up twisting the pelvic bones and legs, contributing to irregular paths for nerves and vessels, twisted again. [Chubby Checker would not be pleased :)]  We end up in pain and discomfort. Commonly with shooting lightening down the legs, we are aching for relief.

Bowen to the rescue. By addressing the fascial sheathes of the hips, buttocks and legs, Bowen Moves help the muscles relax, re-balance and the nerves are freer to normally along their paths. Targeting paths of the sciatic nerves, the gentle procedures reinstate flexibility and adjust the tone of surrounding tissue.

There is relief in your future with Bowen Technique!

Un-nerving Fibromyalgia

By Sue Siebens

fibromyalgia-mosaic1

Many of my friends and clients with Fibromyalgia have shared with me how frustrating their disease.  Their frustration comes when they reach out for help and feel like they get nothing or get treated like they are crazy-making it up.  And it is confusing stuff– how can you feel bad all over and nothing is “broken”.

But there is work in the scientific community that is explaining how that happens.  From my understanding is boils down to too many nerves all in crisis–sending signals that something is wrong. I’m sure that’s a gross oversimplification ūüôā but it’s a model I can work with.

Fibromyalgia-Cause Discovered

It turns out that Bowen Technique addresses nerve pain, where ever it is.  By relaxing the fascia which cradles nerves and all other tissue, nerves get to relax too.

Shaking off Parkinson’s Disease

By Sue Siebens

Parkinsons

Parkinson’s is a favor topic of mine.  It turns out that regardless of which route is taken in the Parkinson’s battle, Bowen Therapy can help with a multitude of symptoms.  This is good, because Parkinson’s seems to be very individual as to what, when, how severe the symptoms become.

Bowen gentle works fascia and muscles to increase fluid transport and communication throughout the body. And gentle, is a key word here.  Fascia is kind of like corn-starch paste: if you try to move it hard and fast, the paste (fascia) resists like it’s make of  hard clay. If you more the same paste (fascia) slowly and gently, it gives and relaxes in the most delicious way, allowing extracellular fluid to flow more freely, delivering nourishment and healing.  Muscles and nerves will act more “normally” as their neighboring tissues become more balanced.

Results using Bowen are best achieved from multiple sessions, schedule a week or two apart.  Each session builds on the last.

Bowen Practitioners who¬†display gentleness, patience and love, will be¬†skilled and supportive companions on Parkinson’s¬†journey.¬†Parkinson’s disease has no cure but I’m sure the symptoms can be managed to promote a better quality of life.

Emotional links to Menieres Disease

By Sue Siebens

tinnitus2

Tinnitus is represented as a range of similar symptoms, such as ringing or buzzing in the ears. The intensity of these symptoms also fall across a large range.  Each person’s experience with the disease is unique and personal.

A new study shows that the location of activity for emotional processing happens in the brain,  is related to the intensity of Tinnitus symptoms.

Emotional Link to Menieres Disease

Bowen Therapy is a great tool for addressing Tinnitus. ¬†Due to the nature of the disease and usual long time suffering by clients before they try Bowen, it may¬†take a few sessions before seeing relief. ¬†But for those that trust in the work, Bowen Therapy’s¬†holistic approach will bring a welcome liberation from debilitating symptoms.

Removing the Buzz of Tinnitus

By Sue Siebens

tinnitus1

Ringing in the ears so loud you can’t hear others talk, or just a irritating ring or an added dizziness and disorientation that sends you to the couch or bed?

Also known as Tinnitus,  Menieres Disease can range from a bothersome irritant to a totally disabling phenomena in a person’s life.  There are many ways an individual comes to this place, from traumatic head injuries, to surgery, to infections, drug or alcohol use, to immune system issues.  It can be a bewildering guessing game as to how to get free of it.

What is Menieres Disease

Fortunately Bowen Therapy can help.   Bowen has procedures that address the fascia, muscle, bones, connective tissue of the head and shoulders. By relieving stressed tissue points, relief is bound to be felt.

Often clients come to Bowen Therapy¬†after years of suffering in chronic misery, having tried many approaches and therapies. ¬†While we all want instant relief, chronic issues most likely will not disappear immediately. ¬†But they have come to trust the work and after¬†just a few Bowen sessions they have some real relief. ¬†After¬†more sessions they have great relief. No drugs. No invasive procedures. It’s a holistic approach to recovering health.

Bowen and Mental Health

By Sue Siebens

MentalHealth

Do Bowen sessions help with mental health issues?

I have to say: YES! it is a wonderful compliment and enhancement to any therapeutic work done for mental health.  Emotional and Mental issues have an effect on the body by tensing muscles, knotting up fascia, binding the visceral organs, interrupting normal hormone flow and disturbing lymphatic and circulatory systems.

What happens in the mind, also happens in the body.

By relieving body stress, the body become more relaxed and functions better.  This takes pressure/worry off the mind, allowing an opening and space in the mental and emotional bodies to heal as well.  It doesn’t happen overnight, periodic sessions are necessary.  But according to my clients, the sessions accelerated their progress and their were very happy with the results.

This article has some great thoughts on Bowen Therapy and Mental Health

I’ve helped clients address their mental health issues including PTSD, Depression and Eating disorders. ¬†It’s amazing what the mind can do when the body has less stress and pain.

Making the connection between chronic pain and muscle tension with Bowen Therapy

By Sue Siebens

I found this nice short article that talks about using Bowen Therapy to make the connection between the muscle tone (tense/relaxed) sensors (golgi bodies) and the signals that are sent to them via the nervous system.

chronic pain

Most often chronic pain is due to muscles that are too continuously too tense.  These tense muscles pull the their attached bones and joints out of alignment and the muscles on the other side of the body or limb to be stretch too much.  Some times it’s even the too stretched side that hurts more then the “tense” side.

Treating Pain with Bowen Therapy

Bowen works the fascia structures that are surround and attached to the muscles and structural tissue to effect a “re-toning”, relaxing or tightening as needed. ¬†This allows the bones and joints to realign and release the kinks or constrictions in essential fluids for nourishment and healing.
